What is an “Influencer?”
Many people think that being an “influencer” isn’t a "real" job, but Emma Chamberlain, one of the internet’s most famous personalities, begs to differ. Chamberlain isn’t just an influencer, she is the influencer.

Since getting her start at the age of 16 in 2017, Chamberlain has revolutionized:
teen fashion and style
YouTube video content
the definition of an influencer
In just under three years, Chamberlain’s
YouTube channel, of the same name, has nearly 10 million subscribers and approximately 300 uploads. Chamberlain has
completely changed the role of an influencer and is a prime example of how successful they can really be. Because of her success she teaches the internet that anything is possible.
Chamberlain Changes Teen Fashion and Style
Like many other celebrities, Emma had a period where everyone knew her name and if you didn’t know her name, you knew her style.
Emma quickly developed a reputation as someone with a quirky sense of style and way of life. Always spotted with her signature high ponytail tied with a scrunchie, she became a mogul for 90s fashion. She was known for being scattershot and for not caring what the rest of the world thought of her. Many young teens easily related to how Chamberlain made standing out conventional.

Flash forward to 2020- it's impossible to ignore the impact Chamberlain has made on the fashion world.
The 90s are no longer obscure to Generation Z, but now crop tops and belts are mainstream and nearly everyone in America seems to be reaching for a scrunchie. Open Instagram today, and you'll see hundreds of influencers sporting the same look.
In 2019, Chamberlain even attended Paris fashion week dressed by designer Louis Vuitton. We think of these events as something exclusive to mega superstars, but Chamberlain went as an influencer and social media mogul. Does that mean influencers are now on the same level as the household names we expect to be attending? Maybe so.
Chamberlain Changes What it Means to be “Relatable”
Chamberlain has become not only an inspiration for many young girls, but she has shown the world that being weird and quirky should never be put in a negative light.
With videos titled “Nose Ring **Gone Wrong**” and “Self Improvement **I Need Help**” being among some of her most popular, her videos not only attract viewers, but are filled with quirky effects and extremely relatable content like moments where she contemplates life or where she laughs at herself. This is something that wasn’t highlighted as heavily by any other YouTuber at the time.

Now, YouTubers across the board have changed their content to be more relatable. Instead of portraying wealth and power, many YouTubers are now highlighting more mundane topics such as thrifting their whole wardrobe, daily vlogs doing normal things, and average problems that average people deal with.
Youtubers have even changed their editing style to reflect Emma’s through lots of zoom-ins and odd sound effects.
Chamberlain Changes Idea of “Influencer”
So why has Chamberlain’s work as an influencer been so impactful and why is she so popular? Well, to put it shortly, she has shown that influencers/content creators/YouTubers, despite the stigma, can be successful in many ways. Moreover, Chamberlain pretty much became viral overnight and the views and following just went up from there.

Emma Chamberlain is able to completely support herself as a 19 year old living in LA with her work on YouTube that comes with sponsorships, the creation of her coffee company-Chamberlain Coffee- and her merchandise store.
Emma Chamberlain is successful and she is successful as an influencer.
